Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian: Tehran/New York will open at Moderna Museet in Stockholm before travelling to Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and Kunstmuseum Den Haag in The Hague.
The exhibition brings together nearly one hundred works made from the 1970s through the 2010s. Farmanfarmaian’s mirror mosaics appear alongside drawings, collages, textile works, sculptures, and the personal objects known as Heartache Boxes. Third Family (2011), a series of mirror reliefs structured through geometric repetition, is identified as a key work.
The exhibition follows the movement of Farmanfarmaian’s life and practice between Tehran and New York. Her encounter with the mirror-covered interior of Shah Cheragh in Shiraz in 1966 became central to her later work. After returning permanently to Tehran in the early 2000s, she again worked with specialised materials, techniques, and mirror-mosaic craftsmanship.
The tour is organised jointly by Moderna Museet, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and Kunstmuseum Den Haag. Asrin Haidari is named as the exhibition’s curator. The Stockholm presentation will run from 3 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, followed by Madrid from 13 April to 30 August 2027 and The Hague from 2 October 2027 to 27 February 2028.
A 226-page illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition in Swedish, English, Spanish, and Dutch. It includes contributions by Nairy Baghramian, Sussan Babaie, Reza Daftarian, Asrin Haidari, Yasmijn Jarram, Azar Mahmoudian, and Sam Samiee.
This record documents a major institutional presentation of Farmanfarmaian’s mirror-based practice across three European museums. Its scale and itinerary make it a significant reference for the international exhibition history of Iranian mirrorwork in contemporary art.
